My laptop has gone rogue on me….

If you’re reading this and you know the answer, please leave a comment…. (or if you’re reading this and just love the way I’ve written it, please leave that comment as well. It never hurts to be flattered when you’re totally frustrated. Takes a bit of the sting out.)

I’ve been using my NEO (it’s a little word processor that runs on batteries for about a year and never acts up) to write the rough draft of my NaNOWriMo novel.

The other night I noticed that the files were almost full, so I started downloading them to my laptop. File #7 was particularly long and I watched the stats creep by… 5% downloaded… 7% downloaded.  I closed my eyes for just a second, but you know how that goes… I was asleep before we got to 10% downloaded.

When I woke up, I must have been bleary eyed and bleary brained, because  after pushing a couple of keys, I saw a menu appear on the screen that was loading words from my novel into it. Knowing that that wasn’t what I intended to happen, the bleary-brained part kicked in and I closed the menu box.  Here’s the result of that short 30 seconds of my life…

… the keys on the left-hand side of the keyboard type letters as they are supposed to… the keys on the right-hand side of the keyboard type numbers…. Nothing I will make it return to normal operation. Luckily, I had the presence of mind to drag and drop my novel onto a flash drive… and luckily I do have the desk-top computer to work on – but someday, I’ll want to use my laptop again and it is no good to me.

I’ve asked the question on Google every which way, but I’m not getting any relevant responses. So, please leave a comment if you have a clue about this. Otherwise, watch for the sale next month on my new invention that automatically encrypts as you write.

Thanks for your help…. or in laptop-ese… T7a89s f1r 213r 7e45!!!!

It sounds as if the keyboard has somehow shorted out…I had something similar happen to my keyboard once, with several of the letters. A new keyboard fixed my problem…not so simple with yours…good luck.

  2. Oh my gosh! I’m so glad you didn’t lose your hard work on the novel! Thank God for back ups, extra computers and flash drives!!!!

  3. Oh, gosh! I feel for you. Glad it’s backed up, but I hope you get it all working again!

Yea!!! We have a solution. It was the Number Lock Key…. Although it took me a little bit to undo it. I now have my letters back. I’m so happy to be able to use the full alphabet again. Thanks to all who offered suggestions and sympathy … here and on Facebook and especially to David who came up with the brilliant solution. I’m a happy writer now… :0)

I think you really are a good writer, in a short story you give us every details about being rouge of your laptop. And I am glad for you, your files haven’t gone 🙂
