Ten common mistakes people make on Twitter.

Once you set up your page on Twitter, it’s relatively easy to use. Effective use of it is an entirely different matter. Here are the most common mistakes people make on Twitter:

1. Before setting up a page on Twitter, people don’t take the time to decide on a clear topic or topics for their page. This is a mistake because people will follow you when they can clearly tell that you are going to tweet about something of interest to them.

2. People don’t always take the time to fix up their blog or website before sending Twitter traffic to it. If you are using Twitter to give attention to your web space, be sure your blog or website is ready for visitors.

3. Another mistake people make is not taking time to learn a little about people before following them on Twitter. To ensure that Twitter will remain interesting to you, it’s important to follow people you find interesting.

4. People often don’t take the time to write a good bio sentence for their Profile page. When others are deciding whether to follow you or not, they usually land on your Profile page. Be sure you have an interesting bio sentence to tell them a little about you.

5. It’s a mistake to tweet only one type of tweet. Others will be likely to skip over your tweets if they all look alike. Mix it up. Tweet some questions for others, tweet with a suggested website, tweet with a picture for others to see, and reply to others in your tweets. And don’t forget to retweet the tweets of others.

6. Many people only tweet at one time of day. They get up in the morning and tweet for twenty minutes and that’s it. If you do this, many people who follow you will miss your tweets. Remember that Twitter is 24-hours a day. Send tweets out at all different times to be sure to hit as many people as possible.

7. Be sure your tweets are entertaining to others. You don’t have to be silly or a ham, but many people make the mistake of being a bit stiff. Think in terms of chatting with a good friend and be a bit spontaneous and entertaining.

8. Many people on Twitter are looking to be educated. Share information that you have. Don’t just tease others with your tweets. Give them information that will be of help to them.

9. If you are on Twitter to bring attention to your product or service, don’t use your Twitter account for a hard sell. Have most of your tweets (90%) about related topics and tweet about your product or service about 10% of the time.

10. Be generous to others. Many people on Twitter are only there for themselves. It’s one of the biggest mistakes people can make. When someone asks a questions on Twitter, answer it if you know the answer. When someone makes an announcement about something their doing, retweet it to your followers to help them reach more people.

Avoid these mistakes and you’ll have a much easier and more enjoyable time on Twitter.

Glad you found the post helpful. I think Twitter is foreign to us because we are so used to writing long passages… Twitter is such a good exercise in economy of words.
